PastoralLetter of the Two American Bishops

Sinceregreetings to all Roman Catholics wherever they may be and united with theremnant Bishops.

Our Lord, JesusChrist, the Incarnate Son of God, promised to be with the Church Militant onearth until the end of time. He has never ceased to fulfill this promise to bewith her as with His beloved Spouse. He has never abandoned the Church even inwhat seem like the darkest hours.

Jesus Christ is theinvisible Head of the Roman Catholic Church. It is He who never ceases to bepresent to guide the Church when teaching, to bless her when at work, and toaid her in time of danger.

We have been forcedout of the churches built by our fathers and forefathers, not by any perverselyproud choice, but by virtue of our sound conscience that cannot toleratedogmatic error nor sound discipline. In a time when we Catholics are constantlyplagued with heretical ideas and urged to “respect” heretics and schismatics,there is hardly anyone with the courage to stand up for the unadulteratedFaith. It is not enough, as you knowfrom the words of St. Paul that “Faith without works is dead” to merely talkabout certain, select elements of the Faith; it is necessary to LIVE in thisworld with our daily lives influenced by the truths of our Faith.

The history of theChurch is replete with examples of heroic virtue. We are surrounded by thegreat monuments in all countries that speak of the faith of those who lived inthe time when such houses of God were built; when supernatural faith spurred ongenerous souls to take on every form of corporal and spiritual work of mercy.

It is with deep andbitter sorrow that we see around us so much grave evil because the Scriptures,Tradition and teachings of legitimate Popes and Councils are ignored. Theheresies of the past are equally responsible for the heresies of the present.What are these heresies that have entered the Church as a “Satanic smoke”?

These heresies haverejected the divine teaching of the Church. From this flows as a logicalconsequence the usurping of the sacred authority of the visible Church by thosenot called to this function. We speak of the rebellious spirit of clergymen ofall kinds. Whether regular (belonging to Religious communities) or secularclergy (belonging to a diocese), all have made themselves the final decision inmatters of doctrine and discipline. Particularly do we have in mind those whostyle themselves as “Traditionalists”.

The Fathers of Trenthad addressed the same heresies we face today. The Fathers of the true VaticanCouncil likewise addressed the errors that have become so common today. It wasPope St. Pius X who condemned the error of Modernism on the one hand, and weBishops condemn the error of Traditionalists today.

The only Bishop ofour times to make an heroic effort to preserve the Church was Bishop Ngo DinhThuc, the elder brother of the assassinated President of South Vietnam. It is throughhim that valid Bishops were consecrated in order to maintain the mark ofApostolicity so essential to the true Mystical Body of Jesus Christ. We cannotblame this heroic Prelate for the terrible proliferation of so-called “bishops”who suddenly appeared like mushrooms after a rain.

We must recognizethe fact that Satan tries to corrupt every good work for the salvation ofsouls. Just as good parents cannot be blamed for their disobedient and waywardchildren, so also no one can blame this brave Prelate for those who have stolenHoly Orders through deception.

The old proscribeddoctrine of naturalism never really died despite the efforts of holy Mother,the Church, to expose it for the work of Satan that it is.

This doctrine feedsthe Modernist anti-Church and, under the guise of religion, destroys religionitself. This disguised naturalism opposes itself in every way to the Christianreligion as a supernatural institution and works with great zeal to exclude oursole Lord and Savior from the minds and memories of men, and from the life andmoral acts of nations.

After forsaking andrejecting the Christian religion, and denying the true God and His Christ, theminds of many have sunk into the abyss of Pantheism, Materialism and Atheism,until denying rational nature itself, and every sound rule of right, they workto destroy the deepest foundation of human society.

It is our wish asshepherds of that “little flock” of which Our Lord spoke that the Infant ofBethlehem pour His divine grace upon each and every member of the family offaith

The "ECCE HOMO"
A remedy for domestic discord

A wealthy couple, in spite of all their riches, lived in constant discord and daily disputes. The married state was anything but a happy state for them; the wife especially often shed bitter tears. One day she happened to come across a manuscript book which was entitled: "Simple Remedies for the Household." It was in her grandmother's handwriting. As she idly turned over the leaves, to her surprise her eye fell upon the heading: "A household remedy against discontent." She read it eagerly; it ran thus: "Whenever you feel miserable or are out of temper, go to the picture of the "Ecce Homo," and place yourself at its feet. Contemplate it attentively for the space of three minutes, and recite three Our Fathers before you go away: this will restore peace and content to your mind. My confessor advised me to do this. I have tried the remedy for thirty years, and I have never found it to fail." The lady remembered that by a mere chance she had kept the picture in question, which had belonged to her grandmother; it was upstairs in the garret. She went up at once, dusted it carefully, and hung it on a nail in her room. Whenever she felt that a quarrel was impending, she tried the simple remedy her grandmother recommended. Through gazing at the countenance of Our Lord, so sorrowful and yet so gentle, she became so much more forbearing and complaisant that her husband remarked upon the change. She answered him with a smile: "I have found an excellent teacher." He wanted to know who that teacher was. So she told him everything quite frankly. Before long her husband also had recourse to this same remedy, when he foresaw that some household annoyance was in store for him. Thus in the course of time peace and happiness prevailed in that family circle.

I came across this quote in a book and though it would be worthwhile for the women of today to consider their vocations a little more carefully. It is rather dated but I think still of interest.

A Challenge to the Woman

“Many American women must choose between individual careers on the one hand and the family and race survival on the other. Motherhood is the greatest career ever known for woman in ancient and modern times, and fatherhood alone can bring men to the highest development of soul.

The greatest job on the planet today is that of mothering. To do it well requires the highest qualities of hand, brain, and heart. All the grace and traditions of the ages and all of the science and psychology of the times here find their noblest opportunity and constant demand. Mother should know the chemistry of foods, for she feeds the family, balances the rations, stokes the human furnaces for the daily work of father and the growth of the children. She holds their life, endurance, longevity and success in her hands. She must be physiologist, physician, sanitary expert, bacteriologist, dietician, physical culturist, nurse, ready to give first and last aid. Mother is on the job all the time, but the doctor only a few minutes, so that intelligence in her counts for a hundred times more than it does in him. Mother must be psychologist, educator, historian, religious leader and story teller; when the children are grown up she should be eugenist and vocational director.

Just for a moment, compare the brains and education necessary for the high class mother’s job with that required for copying letters on a typewriter, selling ribbons over a counter, teaching history from a text book, or even drilling Latin declensions in to reluctant boys. The expansion and intensification of woman’s education for the great job of home and motherhood builds a foundation on which every structure of health, morals, culture, material and spiritual welfare of the society must stand.

If our women fail in their willingness or preparation for motherhood, the race must go down, and our power, property and institutions will pass to other races that have sounder and more normal views o this vital matter.”
